A paper shredder is a valuable security tool for a modest cost. Today's machines often take 10 to 20 stapled pages at a time, as well as computer CDs. Always shred personal documents, check copies and credit offers.

So before you provide your mother's maiden name online by completing your family tree, consider whether this could put your identity at risk.
