Board of Directors Candidates

Victor A. Buccola – Incumbent,
Member since 1968
Following three years on the Supervisory Committee, one year as chair, I served as a SESLOC Director from 1980 to 1990, the last seven years as Vice Chairman and head of the building committee. I have served on the board since July 2007 to complete the term of Andy Cone. I received my bachelor's and master's degrees from Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo, and Ed. D from Arizona State University. I taught at Cal Poly for 34 years. I held various positions which included: Professor of Physical Education, Assistant Football Coach, Head Men's Gymnastic Coach and Director of Athletics. I believe my past experience will aid me in making a positive contribution to SESLOC Federal Credit Union.

Barbara Melvin – Incumbent, Member since 1973
Barbara Melvin is employed at Cal Poly State University as the Director of Human Resources. With more than 30 years of human resources experience and a master's degree in Public Administration, Barbara brings extensive knowledge of personnel and organizational issues to the Board of Directors. She strongly supports SESLOC's philosophy of doing its best to meet member needs while remaining financially strong. She has served on the Board of Directors for 10 years. Prior to this she served on the Credit Committee for seven years. Barbara has a strong commitment to SESLOC Federal Credit Union and looks forward to continuing her service to members in today's everchanging financial environment.

Jim Park – Incumbent, Member since 1967
Jim volunteered on the Supervisory Committee from 1984 to 2000. He received his B.S. and M.S. degrees from the University of Oklahoma and taught in the science field for 33 years. A charter member of the San Luis Obispo Farmers' Market, he served on its Board of Directors for 15 years, many of those years as President. He is now semi-retired, working part-time for the SLO County Department of Agriculture. He looks forward to continuing to help SESLOC increase its sound financial condition while meeting the needs of its members during a third term of service on the SESLOC Board of Directors.

Alden Shiers – Incumbent, Member since 1983
A professor of economics at Cal Poly University, Alden’s areas of specialty are money and banking. He has served on SESLOC’s Board of Directors for the past 18 years and is currently the Chairman. He previously served several years on the Credit Committee, and has also served as a city council member and mayor of Atascadero. His background enables him to make decisions and set policies that keep SESLOC Federal Credit Union financially sound and provide a basis for serving members well. He is committed to maintaining SESLOC's healthy growth and safety in the fast changing financial world.

Jerry Kaml, Member since 1966
My volunteer experience on the Board of Directors, Supervisory Committee and Credit Committee makes me uniquely qualified for this position. I was instrumental in SESLOC's sound asset growth from a $50 million to almost $500 million financial institution, and in the expansion of the field of membership. I pride myself at being involved with SESLOC's branching, extended hours and property acquisition for future growth. I want to be actively involved in planning for our future financial success. I am a Marine veteran and a retired educator with two degrees from Cal Poly and an earned Ph.D. from Michigan State. I volunteer for the American Red Cross, County Historical Society, AARP and serve as a ruling elder in my church.

Y. Leon Maksoudian, Member since 1968
Most of my career has been in academia. I graduated from Cal Poly for my undergraduate degree and the University of Minnesota for my graduate degrees. During my 36 years of teaching at Cal Poly, I have served on many committees, including as chairman of the university-wide Personnel Review Committee. I also served on the Board of Directors of Cal Poly Foundation for six years as faculty representative. On that board I served on the investments committee for two consecutive three-year terms. I was on the Board of Directors of Cal Poly Alumni Association from 1985 to 1994. I have served on several boards of directors of local nonprofit organizations.
