"If You Give a Child a Book..." Childhood Literacy Fundraiser
Donation period has ended. Thank you for your donations!
SESLOC is partnering with KSBY between August 30 and September 10 to raise money for the Scripps Howard Foundation's childhood literacy campaign, "If You Give a Child a Book..." Now more than ever, children need access to books in their homes, and this campaign seeks to make sure books are available to kids who need them most. Childhood literacy is one of the biggest predictors of educational success. A child who can't read at grade level by the end of third grade is four times less likely to graduate.
Access to books at home and one-on-one reading time has a significant impact on literacy, but 61% of low-income students have zero books at home. That's where the "If You Give a Child a Book..." campaign comes in — funds raised will allow students in local Title I elementary schools to build a home library. Last year, the KSBY campaign raised $30,000 — allowing students at two local schools to select 8-9 books.
