We’re partnering with News Channel 12 to honor nonprofit volunteers who make our community thrive. Each month, we’re choosing a different nonprofit and asking them to select a valuable volunteer to receive the SESLOC Cares for Community Award. We are thrilled to introduce our latest recipient, John Moore, a volunteer with Sleep in Heavenly Peace – Santa Barbara County North Chapter.

Meet John Moore, a dedicated volunteer with Sleep in Heavenly Peace. Since opening in January 2022, over 2,400 beds have been built and delivered, ensuring no child in North Santa Barbara County sleeps on the floor.

John first arrived to the Central Coast by assignment by the Air Force to what is now Vandenberg Space Force Base. After completing a full career, he retired from service 10 years ago and chose to stay local.

As a volunteer with Sleep in Heavenly Peace, his friends say John is always the first to arrive and the last to leave, helping provide children with a safe, comfortable place to rest and dream. He often jumps in for what they call the “dirtiest jobs,” and is one of a small group who have mastered all parts of a bed build. On top of building beds, he’s also the team lead for the Lompoc Delivery Team, involving the children he’s delivering to by letting them help assemble headboards and sideboards. To make the cycle full circle, John also often donates additional resources to ensure every recipient also has new and fresh bedding.

Beyond his work with Sleep in Heavenly Peace, John is also a member of Altrusa International of the Central Coast, a non-profit service organization dedicated to community service, literacy programs, and disaster relief. He involves himself with nearly every club project, including the annual Festival of Trees fundraiser during the holiday season.

When he’s not volunteering, John enjoys local theatre and can be found enjoying PCPA performances and The Great American Melodrama. With family in the Carolinas, John roots for the Carolina Panthers during football season.

“John Moore is the kind of volunteer every organization hopes for,” said Collen Grant, Co-Chapter President of Sleep in Heavenly Peace – Santa Barbara North County. “Humble, dependable, and deeply committed to making a difference in the lives of others.”

Congratulations on being recognized as SESLOC’s Community Cares Award recipient!
