International Credit Union Day will return in 2024
We joined credit unions across the nation for International Credit Union Day on Thursday, October 18, 2023 in celebration of what it means to be a part of a credit union. The credit union difference is what sets us apart from other financial institutions. We are not-for-profit, community-based, federally insured and most importantly, we are owned by YOU — our loyal member-owners.
International Credit Union Day may be over, but we believe in celebrating the credit union spirit and the members that make this place so special. Stay tuned for more Member Appreciation Days in the future, and we look forward to celebrating International Credit Union Day again next October.
Here Are 10 Fun Facts About Credit Unions
- 2023 marks the 75th annual celebration of International Credit Union Day.
- The first credit union in the United States was established in 1909 — we got our start a bit later in 1942, with just $500 in assets.
- President Roosevelt signed the Credit Union Act in 1934 to help protect people’s finances during the Great Depression.
- There’s actually a credit union museum in New Hampshire.
- The Credit Union National Association (CUNA) estimates that during the June 2022-June 2023 period, credit unions provided $20,273,178,111 in direct financial benefits to the nation’s 135,877,914 members — that’s a LOT of benefits!!
- Credit union member’s deposits are federally insured by the NCUA up to $250,000
- There are 10x as many female CEOs in credit unions than banks.
- Credit unions are not-for-profit, which means we reinvest profits in our members and community
- Credit unions are owned by their members and cooperative — one member’s savings support another member’s loan.
- Credit unions are community based, so we support local nonprofits, business and schools, and providing essential financial education for free because it makes our community a better place.

Thank You For Supporting Our Local Food Banks!
SESLOC hosted a fundraiser for local food banks in May for the fourth year in a row. SESLOC, employees, and members raised over $15,000 combined for the SLO Food Bank and Food Bank of Santa Barbara County. Each dollar donated buys enough food for 8 meals, thanks to the Food Banks’ network of partners.
