We’re partnering with News Channel 12 to honor nonprofit volunteers who make our community thrive. Each month, we’re choosing a different nonprofit and asking them to select a valuable volunteer to receive the SESLOC Cares for Community Award. We are thrilled to introduce our latest recipient, Dr. Dan Chernow, a volunteer with the Boys & Girls Club of Mid Central Coast.
Meet Dr. Dan Chernow, a lifelong educator whose impact spans scholarship programs and nationwide educational initiatives. After beginning his career in teaching, Dan returned to school at UCLA to complete a Doctorate in Educational Leadership. He continued to dedicate himself to improving educational opportunities by serving as the Executive Director of the UCLA School Management Program, providing consulting and leadership training to public schools across the United States.
Yet his heart is here in Guadalupe, where as part of the Monarch Dunes Trilogy Service Club he helped create the Library and Learning Loft at the Boys & Girls Club Ron Estabillo Clubhouse. Each week, Dan mentors students, shares his love of reading, and builds personal connections, giving children a safe, inspiring place to learn and grow. Facilitating children’s learning has been the fulfillment of giving back.
In addition to reading with the children, Dan often secures cash and in-kind donations to support the purchase of books and other items to improve the Guadalupe Boys & Girls Club library. He’s also been instrumental to bringing in volunteers to make the reading program a major part of the club’s programming.
Outside of his service to the Guadalupe Boys & Girls Club, Dan and his wife have endowed two scholarships at Cal State University Northridge for the college of education. The grants support future teachers in their professional growth. Dan also serves on the Cuesta College Bond Oversight Commitee, the board of the California Coalition for Public Higher Education and is the executive director of the Coalition’s Education Fund.
Congratulations on being recognized as SESLOC’s Community Cares Award recipient!
