SESLOC Education Grants Support Student Reading

What do Bellevue-Santa Fe Charter School and Shandon High School have in common? They are both recent recipients of SESLOC Education Grants.

With our roots as a credit union for San Luis Obispo county educators, SESLOC has a strong commitment to education. Our Education Grants program supports classroom learning, creativity, and innovation.

Here’s how these teachers are using their grants to promote reading:

Bellevue-Santa Fe Charter School in Avila Valley purchased a Resource Center complete with world history books. According to teacher Kevin Ashworth, the new addition has made access to books so much easier. He adds, “students are browsing these titles more frequently, which is increasing engagement in our social studies unit — we’re currently in Egypt. And it just looks good! I’m so grateful to SESLOC for your help.”

Shandon High School’s English department purchased a variety of comfortable seating options to create an inviting reading nook for their students. Teacher Madelyn Diagle said one of her goals this year is improve her students vocabulary, reading fluency, and comprehension through independent reading. Since implementing the project, students have requested to stay longer in the nook and read more.

Thank you, Kevin and Madelyn, for your commitment to classroom learning!

Pre-K through 12th grade teachers and directors of enrichment programs at accredited schools within San Luis Obispo and Northern Santa Barbara Counties are invited to apply for grants up to $500 to fund special projects and expand classroom resources. Last year, we awarded $15,366 to 32 recipients.

SESLOC supports our community. Help us support local schools by sharing the grant application with Central Coast teachers or by applying today.
