POSSIBLE CONSEQUENCES:
-
Your card is immediately closed and a new card is ordered. Meanwhile, you have no ATM or Point of Sale access to your account.Criminals use your PIN to drain the funds in your checking account.
-
You must file a police report and an investigation may be required before funds can be restored to your account.
-
OR...Funds are not withdrawn, but your card is closed when SESLOC is notified of fraud at a location where you used your card.
When a wave of fraud hits, SESLOC immediately notifies all affected members by mail. It is important that we have your current address.
PREVENTION: If you use a debit or ATM card for gasoline purchases, go inside to pay. Indoor card swipe machines are better protected from after-hours thieves.
HELP US PROTECT YOU. Here are some simple rules:
-
Never let your debit card out of your sight (such as at restaurants).
-
Only swipe your card and enter your PIN at indoor terminals.
-
Protect yourself from "shoulder surfers" -- people who try to observe your PIN entry to gain access to your account.
-
Never use your Visa Check Card (debit card) online.
-
Never share your PIN with others. Any withdrawal of funds is now considered "authorized," no matter how much they take.
-
Use your credit card when you pay at the pump. It's safer and funds in your checking account will remain in place.
-
If you wish, you may use our automated Phone Teller system or Online Account Access and immediately to transfer the funds to pay off your SESLOC credit card charge. (PIN required).
-
Contact SESLOC immediately if you believe your card is compromised.
ALTERNATE ACCESS TO CASH. A compromised ATM/Debit card is shut down immediately. You will have no ATM or Point of Sale access to your funds. This can be a major inconvenience if you're on the road. In addition, account research and a police report may be required before stolen funds can be restored to your account, so it's important to have alternate access to funds, such as a check or second ATM card (e.g. a joint owner's card may still work).
Losses from fraud affect all members because they reduce the dividends we are able to pay on deposit accounts. If you have questions, please contact a SESLOC Member Services Representative.
