If You Give a Child a Book…”
Support childhood literacy on the Central Coast
September 1 – September 26, 2026
SESLOC is once again partnering with KSBY to raise money for the Scripps Howard Foundation’s childhood literacy campaign, “If You Give a Child a Book…”
Now more than ever, children need access to books in their homes, and this campaign seeks to make sure books are available to kids who need them most. Childhood literacy is one of the biggest predictors of educational success. A child who can’t read at grade level by the end of third grade is four times less likely to graduate. Access to books at home and one-on-one reading time has a significant impact on literacy, but 61% of low-income students have zero books at home.
That’s where the “If You Give a Child a Book…” campaign comes in.
Funds raised will allow students in local Title I elementary schools to build a home library.
In 2025, we raised over $102,000 together, allowing all students at Arellanes, Bonita, Lillian Larsen, and Oceano Elementary Schools to select five books each to launch their personal home libraries!
Just $12 buys two books for a child in need.

Scripps Howard Foundation is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit (EIN: 31-6025114), supporting philanthropic causes important to The E.W. Scripps Company and the communities it serves, like the Central Coast through KSBY. The “If You Give a Child a Book…” was launched in 2016 and has provided over 500,000 books to children at Title I schools in Scripps communities in order to support childhood literacy.
In 2025 SESLOC employees, members, and community partners raised over $114,288 in combined support for our fundraisers for our local food banks, childhood literacy, and the Family Care Network.

Seventh Annual Food Bank Fundraiser Raises over $9,400
Thanks to the generosity of donating member-owners and employees, we raised a combined total of $9,480.78 in 2026. Thank you!
Fifth Year of Childhood Literacy Campaign Raises Over $100,000 to Support Local Schools
In 2025, the community, SESLOC members and SESLOC employees raised $102,372 to support childhood literacy with the “If You Give a Child a Book…” campaign.
Thank You for “Giving Joy”
We recently held a holiday fundraiser in our branches and online in support of the Family Care Network. This local nonprofit supports children and youth in foster care, as well as families struggling with homelessness and unhealed trauma in San Luis Obispo and Northern Santa Barbara Counties this holiday season.
Savings are insured to at least $250,000 and backed by the full faith and credit of the U.S. government. National Credit Union Administration, a U.S. government agency.
